Commentary for Chapter One - "Our Saga Begins..." - Page 8[Saturday, September 7, 2002 @ 3:46 PM] posted by WolfBoy |
Originally, we planned to have a triumvirate of evil, all with the sirname Black. Here we introduce the first of our antagonists - Jackson Black. Visually, he's based of a friend of ours. Jackson's manner of speech is based off of your stereotypical Southern Baptist minister. It helps to keep that in mind when reading his dialogue.
Also, cut and paste can be your friend. Especially if you need a lab full of Mac using zombies. I forget what game the last panel is from though.

I didn’t intend Jackson to sound like a Baptist Minister; I was actually just going for higher English, and a classic way of speaking. Like a villain from a 19th century novel.
Jackson is based on our friend Dave, who mark did a great job of caricaturing. Dave loved the fact that it looked just like him. It also started the trend of friends begging to be in the comic. Eventually, I got them all in there. Another note, the last name Black was decided before we decided to model Jackson after Dave. It was an unintentional pun.
I originally called for a scene from Quake III to be used in the last panel; because that’s the game I was actually playing in the Mac lab when I was writing these strips. I had wanted it to be drawn, but Mark opted to cut and paste real game shots, which I thought was a cool idea. We ran that into the ground, but always did it with style.
BTW, the game isn’t Quake III. I always thought it was Halo.
